Alumna Chosen For Diamond Jubilee Emerging Artist Project

Alumna Art Comission

Nicola Hutchinson receives recognition for her artwork

UH Arts commission outdoor feature

As part of the celebrations of the University’s Diamond Jubilee year, UHArts has commissioned an outdoor contemporary work of art for the College Lane Campus, to be undertaken by one of the University’s emerging artists.

A number of excellent submissions were received from alumni, and, after review, Nicola Hutchison (MSc Music Composition for Film and Media, 2011) was awarded the commission.   Nicola creates compositions in a range of media, with a particular focus on sound. Her work explores themes of embodiment, process and the interaction between different media and art forms. Nicola will be researching the outdoor spaces at the College Lane Campus and considering how physical engagement with a space (including making and hearing sound) can affect how people might feel and think creatively.

As part of the commission she is also being mentored by established artist Lyndall Phelps, who is creating a piece of art for the de Havilland Campus. Both pieces of art are expected to be finished in early 2013, when they will be officially launched as part of the University’s art collection.

Contact Amisha Karia at a.1.karia@herts.ac.uk for more details about this commission or the University’s wider collection. In addition, email alumni@herts.ac.uk if you are interested in providing Nicola with your ideas and experiences of interacting with the College Lane Campus.
