Peer mentoring

Two students talking

One-to-one mentoring

Most suitable for Year 12/13

Sixth form pupils who may be considering applying to higher education but face barriers such as learning difficulties, physical disabilities, CLA or EAL can find support through University of Hertfordshire student mentors.

Our mentors will:

  • encourage pupils to pursue education
  • inform them of the support available at University
  • guide them in making choices
  • support them in applying to Higher Education

Duration

10 weeks - although the Peer Mentoring programme can be tailored to suit individual needs.

Support can vary between dealing with disengagement to subject specific.

Outcomes

  • Over 90% of mentored students report that the support of a mentor has enabled them to continue with their studies
  • Most mentees felt that they had benefited from the mentoring mainly because it gave them a chance to ask questions about University which perhaps they wouldn’t be able to ask anyone else; ‘silly’ questions or individual worries
  • Pupils felt that their mentors were helpful and understanding and they had been encouraged to apply to University
