Secondary school programmes

One-to-one mentoring

These University of Hertfordshire mentoring programmes have been devised and developed specifically for use in secondary schools to help raise the educational aspirations, academic attainment and confidence levels of your pupils.

Our mentors are trained and CRB checked University of Hertfordshire students who use their own experience to encourage and support pupils in school.

They act as role model and confidante, and provide an encouraging external relationship that helps the young person to focus on their education.

Mentoring programmes

One-to-one mentoring

  • Raising motivation mentoring
One-to-one mentoring - most suitable for Year 7/8/9.
  • Raising attainment mentoring
One-to-one mentoring - most suitable for Year 9/10/11.
  • Raising aspiration mentoring
Small group work - most suitable for Year 9/10/11.
This can be combined with one-to-one mentoring.
  • Inclusion mentoring
One-to-one mentoring - suitable for pupils who are at risk of exclusion, hard to place pupils, children looked after, young carers, disabled pupils and pupils with English as an additional language.
  • Peer mentoring
One-to-one mentoring - most suitable for Year 12/13.
Mentors will work with sixth form pupils who may be considering applying to higher education but face barriers such as learning difficulties, physical disabilities, CLA or EAL.

E-mentoring

  • E-mentoring programmes can be used to support any of the mentoring schemes or can stand alone to, for example, extend Gifted and Talented pupils, encourage pupils interested in health care related careers, raise attainment for C/D borderline GCSE pupils or give subject specific support.

Peer Mentor training for Sixth Formers

  • Sixth Form Peer Mentor volunteers are trained within their schools so that they can support younger pupils with either behavioural and/or academic issues.

Tailored to suit your school aims

All of the mentoring programmes can be tailored to suit your school aims. The materials you need to start and sustain a school mentoring programme are included in the training package.
