Primary school mentoring programmes

Three primary school pupils drawing

The University of Hertfordshire Mentoring Unit offers primary schools mentoring programmes that can make improvements in the behaviour of young pupils such as:

  • improving their confidence
  • raising their aspirations
  • a new willingness to share and co-operate

Mentoring transition scheme

This 8 week programme is designed to support Year 6 pupils who are about to move to secondary school introducing them to the idea of higher education and the importance of obtaining a good education.

Undergraduate students who have been trained as mentors work in pairs with small groups of children in Year 6 to raise their confidence levels and ease any fears of moving to secondary school.

Professor Fluffy programme

The Professor Fluffy primary project is an exciting programme that has been designed to raise awareness of further and higher education.

In a fun and enjoyable way the project aims to explain to primary children in Year 5, and their parents, the educational options available to them.

The children can access an interactive Professor Fluffy website and complete an activity book.

A day visit to university enables both the children and parents to:

Three primary school pupils
  • meet current students
  • attend a fun lecture
  • take part in an activity in Art & Design
  • attend their own mini graduation ceremony

Evaluation feedback has shown that:

  • 97% of the young pupils who participated say that they would like to go to university.
  • parents report feeling better equipped to support their children to apply.

There are currently opportunities for Primary schools to obtain the Professor Fluffy programme on a match funded basis.
