Become a mentor or coach

Students, thumbs up

In schools we deliver mentoring and coaching programmes that can help raise pupils' aspirations and confidence levels about higher education.

On campus we deliver mentoring and coaching programmes that help students settle into University life, and provide academic support.

Our mentors and coaches are mainly University of Hertfordshire students and community volunteers who use their own time and experience to encourage others.

Benefits

This is an opportunity for you to develop your own skills and experience, whilst supporting others.

Being a mentor or coach is very rewarding and can benefit you in many ways such as:

  • improving your interpersonal and communication skills
  • boosting your self-esteem and confidence
  • providing valuable experience to add to your CV

Mentors and coaches from all areas of the University and the local business community are welcome. We offer a comprehensive training programme to ensure everyone feels confident about their role.

Choose from a variety of programmes, depending on the time you can give and the time of year.

At University of Hertfordshire

  • National Scholarship Programme: long-term work with University of Hertfordshire students who come from areas with a history of low progression to university, supporting them socially and academically
  • Peer coaching: 10-week programme working with students on a similar course to help raise their academic achievement

In schools

  • one-to-one mentoring in secondary and primary schools
  • group work mentoring in secondary and primary schools
  • online e-mentoring programmes with secondary school pupils

All mentors and coaches will receive appropriate training and clearly understand the time commitment involved for their preferred programme before commencing on their mentoring relationship. You also need to complete a DBS enhanced disclosure.
