Evaluation

The University of Hertfordshire delivers a wide ranging programme of outreach and undergraduate student support activities aimed at students who are under-represented in Higher Education (HE).

Outreach activities target secondary school pupils and are designed to increase aspirations and awareness of HE, provide valuable information and guidance and boost attainment. Support for UH undergraduates is delivered by Herts Success and focuses on students’ retention, success and employability by offering a rich programme that impacts transition both in and out of university.

Impact

In addition to planning and delivering this programming, the Outreach and Widening Participation Department evaluates these activities in order to measure their impact on participants and ensure these audiences both enjoy and benefit from our provision. We are pleased to share our yearly outputs.

An evaluation framework, based on Bengry-Howell and Hayton’s model of evaluating widening participation (2015), binds the different strands of our provision together and allows us to ensure that current - and future - programming is consistent in its aims and intended outcomes. We use a variety of evaluation tools to monitor activities, including pre and post event questionnaires and focus groups, which allow us to disseminate both demonstrable outcomes and compelling qualitative accounts of students’ experiences.

  • Developing an evaluation strategy that effectively monitors all activity
  • Producing research methods and tools to accurately capture student feedback
