Know Thyself: Magic, Medicine and Religion

 

In her first major UK exhibition since returning from Italy in 2000, multi-media artist Lorraine Clarke explored the link between magic, medicine and religion, from the ancient amulet to reproductive cloning, through installations, soundscapes and mixed media works. This book is a full-colour record of the show, with a statement from the artist and an essay by Dr Ruth Richardson, a critic and medical historian.

Ranging from entire installations to intriguing small-scale pieces reminiscent of 'cabinets of wonders', Clarke’s work questioned the way in which our conception of humanness is changing. A major point of reference was current bio-scientific research into the very stuff of the human being, such as stem cells and genetic material. At the same time, the work was deeply concerned with ancient rites and historic medical practices.

Clarke’s work is an excavation of the human being, evoking the history of our bodily awareness as well as exploring contemporary political, ethical and social issues, while seeking to reveal to viewers the beauty and vulnerability of their own physicality.

Lorraine Clarke studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art and also has a postgraduate diploma in Art & Psychology (Art Therapy). From 1981 to 2000 she lived and worked in Italy, exhibiting her work in several cities there. In 2002 she co-founded Euroart Studios & Gallery in London of which she continues to be the Art Director.
