Running the University
The day-to-day running of the University is the responsibility of the Vice-Chancellor, our Chief Executive and Academic Head.
Professor Quintin McKellar has been the Vice-Chancellor of the University since the 4 January 2011.
The members of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor are the senior officers of the university who are appointees of the Board of Governors.

The responsibilities of the Vice-Chancellor are set out in the University’s Articles of Government. They include, but are not limited to:
- the interrelationship of the Board of Governors and the Academic Board
- the internal structures and organisation of the University
- student and staff discipline and appeals and the interface between the University and external bodies and agencies
Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Professor Graham Galbraith
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor has overall responsibility, on the Vice-Chancellor’s behalf, for:
- research
- academic planning
- academic staffing
- staff development and relationships with the recognised trade unions
- international and regional activities and developments
- international partnerships and strategic development
- induction and retention of international students
Group Finance Director
Mr A Moffat
The Group Finance Director has responsibility for:
- all aspects of financial management within the Group including financial control
- statutory reporting
- treasury
- tax
- insurance and commercial financial support for the academic community
Secretary and Registrar
Mr P E Waters
The Secretary and Registrar is Clerk to the Board of Governors, Secretary to the Academic Board and responsible for:
- the management and operation of the Boards and their committees
- Company Secretary of the University’s wholly-owned subsidiary companies (other than Universitybus Limited and Unisecure Limited)
- responsible for the effective operation of the Academic Registry and for monitoring compliance with all University policies, regulations and procedures
- legal matters relating to the University and its wholly-owned subsidiary companies and for the interface between the University, the companies and their legal advisers
The Secretary and Registrar is the University’s Licence Holder and is responsible for support staffing, organisation and discipline; the co-ordination of Information Communications Technology (ICT) and the university’s interface with Government statistical agencies.
