Environmental policy
We are actively working to make the University of Hertfordshire a more sustainable place to live, work and study.
The University’s Environmental Policy demonstrates our commitment to reducing the University’s environmental impact.
EcoCampus
We are implementing EcoCampus, an Environmental Management System, which seeks to manage environmental risks and continually improve environmental performance.
EcoCampus is closely aligned to ISO 14001, the International environmental management standard, and BS 8555, the British guidance standard.
EcoCampus is a four stage accreditation process (bronze, silver, gold and platinum). The University is currently working towards gold.
The system covers all aspects of the University’s operations including:
- waste management
- energy use
- water efficiency
- sustainable purchasing
- construction and refurbishment
- biodiversity
- travel
- community involvement
Raising awareness
Student EcoReps and staff members of the Environmental Working Group, work to engage with the University community to raise awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and to promote knowledge and understanding.
The EcoReps hold a number of events and activities throughout the year including:
- Photo competitions
- Fairtrade and local wine tastings
- Waste awareness days
The Environmental Working Group members get involved in a variety of initiatives including recycling and energy walkabouts and promoting sustainable purchasing.

Local community
Our Environment Team work on a range of projects with local charities, schools and community groups.
In 2007/08 and 2008/09 student EcoReps visited local schools to raise awareness of a variety of environmental issues, including:
- ‘hidden water’ in products such as food and shoes
- ‘food miles’
Help us make a difference
Together students, staff and the local community have the power to make a real difference to the world we live in.
