Energy Certificates
The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive is currently being implemented across Europe with the aim to increase the energy efficiency of buildings. The University has in place the necessary documentation including Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs):
- EPCs determine the expected energy performance of a building when it is first built
- DECs display the actual performance of a building when it has been in operation for at least one year
Both EPCs and DECs provide a rating for the building, which is a numerical indicator of the predicted/actual annual carbon emissions for the building, and is based on the amount of energy potentially/actually consumed during the occupation of the building compared to a hypothetical building equal to one typical of its type (the benchmark).
The rating is shown on a scale from A to G, where A is the lowest (best performing) and G is the highest (the worst performing).
EPCs are produced for all new builds at the University; the Law Court is our most recent development and this achieved an EPC of A. The first DEC for the Law Court will be produced in late 2012.
