Green Impact Universities Award Scheme

NUS has extended its successful environmental improvement award scheme ‘Green Impact Student Unions’ to Universities and this year the University of Hertfordshire is taking part. The Green Impact Award Scheme encourages environmental improvement across campus through competitive team participation. More information about the scheme can be found on the NUS website.

Power Down

Power Down is a joint initiative between the University and the Students' Union, which aims to encourage students to save energy and increase recycling in the halls of residence. Launched in 2011 it encourages Houses to compete to win monthly prizes, ranging from a free meal and drink, to discounted Blink tickets at The Forum. At the end of the year the grand prize of a House night out at The Forum nightclub.

Students are encouraged by housemates and student EcoReps to reduce consumption through simple activities such as cooking together, turning off electrical equipment and dressing for the weather.

The recycling facilities available in the residences are also promoted to ensure everyone understands how to manage their waste. Various events take place throughout the year to promote participation including awareness stands, quizzes, walkabouts and interactive displays.

Environmental Working Group

We have an active working group consisting of staff volunteer representatives. The EWG works to raise awareness of environmental issues, to drive environmental improvement in their working area and to support the implementation of the Environmental Management System.

EcoReps

We have an active set of student representatives that help the Environment and Sustainability Team to raise awareness of environmental issues to students. Our EcoReps actively work to promote events and campaigns such as Environment Week and Power Down.
