Biodiversity

The University’s Environment and Sustainability Policy makes a commitment to manage the grounds to create and enhance wildlife habitats and as such the University works closely with its grounds maintenance contractor. There are a variety of habitats and associated species, which are recognised as being of significance within the UK and Hertfordshire Biodiversity Action Plans, on the College Lane campus and Bayfordbury sites, including Hazel Grove and Hooks Grove woodlands and Rough Hills grassland.

The University has undertaken a number of habitat creation projects including wildflower meadow development, bird and bat box installation and hedgerow planting. In 2011 the University also saw the installation of its second sedum roof, which is located on the Law Court Building.

In order to improve staff, student and visitor awareness of the importance of biodiversity a number of wildlife walks take place throughout the year and interpretation boards are also in place at key locations.
