University of Hertfordshire launches 2017 Formula Student racing car
The University of Hertfordshire’s racing team UH Racing – the most successful UK Formula Student team of all time – launched its 2017 racing car, UH20, at an event yesterday evening (Wednesday 7 June).
Racing driver and Presenter of Five’s Fifth Gear, Vicki Butler-Henderson, hosted the event, during which the team launched its most advanced design to date.
The teams design ethos was for the UH20 car is “Cost Based Design Decisions” which has led to a number of design changes from previous cars. This includes UH Racing’s first direct damping suspension system, a custom spool, custom designed brake callipers and a custom dashboard. As well as this, significant development has been undertaken to create a more advanced aerodynamics package.
Over the next few months UH Racing will compete nationally and internationally against other student racing teams from across the world, with upcoming competitions including Formula Student UK (Silverstone from 20-23 June) and Formula Student Czech Republic (2-5 August).
Efficient and advanced design
Vicki Butler-Henderson, said: “I was delighted to host the launch of the University of Hertfordshire’s 2017 student racing car – UH20. The design and the hard work that has gone into developing the car is incredibly impressive and I’d love to return at some point in the future to give it a test run!
“It is fantastic to see the dedication of these young engineers and I have great admiration for them all. Motorsport is a hugely competitive industry, but these talented young people are already taking great strides towards become the next generation of world-class engineers. I wish them all the very best for their future careers.”
Team member and final year Engineering student Tariq Willis, said: “Our team members have been working tirelessly to produce an even more efficient and advanced design, to top previous cars, and we are delighted with the result, as this design does show great progress. We hope UH20 will lead us to victory this year, as we head out to compete internationally against other top Formula Student teams.”
Formula Student success
UH Racing was founded in 1997 by University of Hertfordshire students and the team has since competed in every IMechE Formula Student event, since its inception in 1998.
Over the course of 20 years, the team has entered Formula Student competitions world-wide with cutting edge petrol, electric and hydrogen powered cars and won countless awards. UH Racing continues to evolve with new technologies every year, to produce a successful single seat race car, further contributing to the team’s heritage of success.
The launch event last night celebrated the success of Hertfordshire’s Formula Student teams over the last two decades, demonstrating how the cars have changed over time. It also showcased a range of student engineering projects, covering aerospace, automotive, novel materials, communications, digital technology and electronics.
