A group of five University of Hertfordshire events students have raised over £1,150 for the Lister Hospital in Stevenage in aid of the North and East Hertfordshire NHS trust; 'The Magic of Play' appeal.

Record breaking funds

Second year students, Katie Root, Kate Marsden, Taylor Shannon, Ellie Slingsby and Devann Graham, working under the name 'Blue Turtle Events', organised the record breaking charity auction as part of their Event Planning Design and Community Engagement module at the University of Hertfordshire which broke the current module record for the amount of money raised.

Kate Marsden, student member of Blue Turtle Events, says: "The project delivered invaluable experience and allowed us to gain practical learning as rather than sitting in a lecture being told how to organise an event, we actually got to do it, which was great. The team feels very proud to help fund towards such an important appeal."

The Magic of Play appeal

With a mother and mother-to-be among the group, deciding to help the Hospital's ill children was an easy choice for the group. The appeal aims to raise £250,000 to build and equip a new playroom with a dedicated area for children with cancer on the Children's Unit. The students raised the money by inviting guests to a disco night at Cromwell Hotel with a raffle and auction; which prizes included tickets to Paradise Wildlife Park, a designer watch and a BBQ from Homebase.

The most professional event

Allan Jepson, Module Leader at the University, added: "This event was by far the most professional event I have seen since my time at Hertfordshire, and has set a new record for the module which allows our students to engage and support third sector work within our local community."
