Sports professionals and athletes can now prepare themselves for a second career once they have retired from sport via a new online degree being offered by the University of Hertfordshire.

The BSc Sports and Business Management course, which is 100% online, is a UK first and exclusively for the sporting elite who wish to enhance their current or future careers. Designed to fit around busy training and competition schedules, the degree allows students to gain credits for their professional sporting experience which will count toward degree completion.

Andrew Francis, Head of Marketing and Enterprise in Hertfordshire Business School, said: "Developing business knowledge is a common interest for sports professionals and this unique degree gives sporting elites the chance to achieve success in a second managerial career once they have retired. It has been established completely with the sporting individual in mind - they can study flexibly online whilst maintaining their sports commitments and it is taught, solely in the context of sport."

The programme works in consultation with the English Institute of Sport as well as a range of other business and sports experts.

Andrew continued: "Our links with business and sports employers can also assist students in seeking new opportunities and experiences when in transition from a full-time sports professional into a future career."
