Former Hurricanes football players chosen for European Championships

3 October 2013

University team continues to perform at an international level.

Out of forty-five players, eight former and current members of the Hertfordshire Hurricanes were selected for the American Football European Championship this summer, including two current members of the University team's coaching staff.

All were announced as part of the GB Lions American Football Squad and were selected to play for the European Championships in Milan, Italy in September. The team won the bronze medal by defeating Czech Republic on a final score of 24-13.

Hurricanes Head Coach, Jim Messenger said: 'I'm very pleased for all those Hurricanes, past and present, who represented Great Britain in Italy this year. They have all been outstanding members of our team and deserve the recognition for their hard-work and commitment. I have no doubt they all gave their best for the Great Britain team in exactly the way they have done for the University of Hertfordshire Hurricanes. They have all been a credit to the University, the sport and now to their country as well.'

Out of the forty five players, thirty eight are alumni from a university team and ten represent Britain for the University Lions too.  The University's players are: Frederick Boyle, Temi Oduyemi, Matthew Meyer, Stuart Holland, Stephen Gregory, Fabrizio Gargiulo, Leslie Oluwole-Wilson, and David Jennison.

Anthony Fitzpatrick, another former Hurricane, is part of the Lions Coaching staff. Fabrizio Garguilo and Matthew Meyer are currently coaches for the University team, while Stuart Holland and David Jennison will continue as players for the 2013-14 season as the team seek to win a sixth national championship.
