Alumna wins top scholarship

3 October 2013

Lynsey Northeast is named the 2013 winner of The Society of Sports Therapists' 'Student Travelling Scholarship'.

As the recipient of the 'Student Travelling Scholarship', Lynsey Northeast will travel to The University of Windsor, Ontario where she will be spending one month with the Athletic Therapy team at the Green Shield Sports Therapy Clinic. She will also have the chance to spend time with top teams from a variety of Canadian sports.

'I'm shocked and speechless; I can't believe I've been chosen for such a fantastic opportunity.  I'm looking forward to getting started, learning from and working with top athletes, teams and their therapists.'

The Sports Therapy graduate, who left with a First Class Honours degree in 2013, has earned some valuable experience to date. In Lynsey's placement year she worked with the London Broncos Rugby League Senior Squad, and more recently she provided sports therapy to the England team at the 2013 Wheelchair Rugby Cup.

The Travelling Scholarship will give Lynsey the opportunity to gain some hands on experience with sports teams such as the Windsor Spitfires junior ice hockey team and the Hamilton Tiger Cats football team. The trip also includes a visit to Sheridan College, Oakville and the Loaring Physiotherapy Clinic in Tecumseh, Ontario.

Professor Graham N. Smith, Chairman of The Society of Sports Therapists, who was one of the interview panel on the day said: 'The judging process is always tough and this year was no exception. However, Lynsey submitted an outstanding written application, the standard of which she reproduced in her interview. It is obvious that she has a passion for Sports Therapy. I know that she will be a credit to the Society and an excellent ambassador for it.'

Athletic Therapist Kathy Harvie who is based at the Green Shield Sports Therapy Clinic also said: 'Lynsey exuded a massive amount of energy and enthusiasm which was so very well expressed.  She is a person for whom people are first and then the sport. She has spent a year out of university working in a clinical, sporting setting and the benefits are clear.'
