    New method of measuring the mass of supermassive black holes

    In a letter to Nature, an international team of astronomers, including Marc Sarzi from the University of Hertfordshire, report the exciting discovery of a new way to measure the mass of supermassive black holes in galaxies. By measuring the speed with which carbon monoxide molecules orbit around such black holes, this new research opens the possibility of making these measurements in many more galaxies than ever before.

    The ‘learn while you earn’ approach to specialist science courses is part of a drive by the University of Hertfordshire to address the intensifying skills shortage faced by UK pharmaceutical companies. The University is collaborating with leading life science company Melbourn Scientific to develop a new part-time MSc degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences that reflects the needs of industry.

    The University of Hertfordshire has awarded Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (HPFT), the main provider of mental health and learning disability services across the county, University Trust status, making it only the third mental health organisation in the country to be awarded this prestigious status.
