Robe hire
The University's practices for Awards Ceremonies are formal and strictly enforced. The University has a prescribed academic dress which graduates may wear to their ceremony. Our agreed supplier is Wippell & Co. Graduates with any doubts about the procedure should contact us immediately to avoid any embarrassment on the day.
Do not order your robe unless you have registered your attendance as we will not be expecting you nor allow you entry to the awards ceremonies. There are no exceptions to this rule.
You will know if you have registered correctly because you will have received email confirmations from the University and the payment provider (as there is a separate fee to attend the ceremony which does not cover robe hire).
Robes are not compulsory but the majority of students choose to wear them. You may wear appropriate smart dress under your robe preferably with a button on the front of your top to attach the robe hood.
You must order your robe before your ceremony. The deadline date closes 1 week before the first ceremony.
How much does it cost?
- £47 – Doctorate (complete robe set)
- £43 – Masters (complete robe set)
- £42 – all other awards (complete robe set)
The difference in price is due to the gowns that are worn for that award.

Have the following ready before you order your robe from J Wippell & Co:
- Qualification
- Date and time of your ceremony
- Height
- Chest measurement
- Hat size (the circumference of the head horizontally, just above the ears)
- Credit or debit card details
