Top UK Formula Student Team at the University Of Hertfordshire

UH Racing, part of the School of Engineering and Technology, allows students to gain experience build racing cars and compete against other Universities in the UK, Europe and across the world through the Formula Student scheme.

University of Hertfordshire students are showcasing their talent as they prepare to enter their fifteenth model (UH15) as the Top UK Team.

The challenge

Formula Student challenges students from around the world to design and build a single-seat racing car and put it to the test at Silverstone. The competition, which has been running for the past fourteen years, encourages teams to be innovative in their design and work on both the technical and business aspects of the project.

How the University helped

Entering the Formula Student competition allows the University of Hertfordshire to provide its students with the best possible industry experience. The competition process demonstrates the importance of team work and tests students’ ability to cope with tight timescales and working under pressure. Formula Student offers invaluable experience to engineering students where they can stretch their technical skills, develop their business acumen and showcase their talent.

The results

In 2011, UH Racing made the decision to combine Masters and Undergraduate students to develop a single Class 1 racing model to enter into the global competition. The decision to merge all of UH Racing’s Formula Student activities gave the team a large knowledge base to create UH14. This model was the most successful to date, with UH Racing ranking as the top UK team and taking third place in the global competition.

Dr Howard Ash, a senior lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, said: “It is a great achievement for the students to say they are the highest ranking UK team. I give merit to everyone involved, it really is a true testament to the excellent work we do here and showcases the best of UK student talent, and to that end I have several business cards from people after our graduates!”

After the success of UH14 there are high hopes for the new UH15 model which will compete in the 2012 Formula Student competition.
