A pioneering gadget, which eliminates 99% of germs on computer keyboards, has been tested at the University of Hertfordshire’s Biodet laboratory.Falcon Innovations’ Germ Genie UV technology has been shown by scientists to even be effective against C.difficile (Clostridium difficile) – a bacteria which is a key concern in hospitals and is more common than MRSA as well as harder to destroy.
How did the University of Hertfordshire help?
The University of Hertfordshire’s Biodet laboratory began testing Germ Genie in October 2010 and revealed that it kills 99% of germs across most of the keyboard in just two minutes, and across the whole keyboard in ten minutes.
It works by sensing finger movement on the computer keyboard and once the user has finished, sanitises the keys with UV light. This method leaves the keyboard ready for the next user so they will not pick up microbes that would otherwise have posed a risk of passing on infection.
Practical application
Germ Genie has great potential in hospitals because it can:
- prevent the spread of flu, MRSA and E.Coli
- kill C.difficile bacterium ( alcohol rubs don’t)
- provide a hostile environment in keyboards to ward off bugs
- activate after each user has finished
- sanitise using UV light which is safe
