Full case study

The business idea

LSW’s customers demand flexible, low-cost, lean manufacturing facilities that can be easily adapted for production of multiple derivatives.

The business challenge

LSW aimed to develop a Knowledge Base System (KBS) to support product development, reducing costs and lead-times through optimised modular product designs.

LSW needed to access the University’s knowledge and expertise in computer-aided manufacturing, group technology analysis, KBS and value engineering and specialist research facilities.

How the University helped

LSW was able to focus more time on high value-added activity, thus increasing production capacity and was able to access the University’s knowledge in computer-aided manufacturing, group technology analysis and specialist research facilities.

The results

LSW is now able to compete effectively in the marketplace.

Key benefits include:

  • skilled staff focusing more time on high value-added activity, thus increasing production capacity
  • initial design time reduced via use of standard modules, thus offering competitive project lead times
  • reduction in design errors, thus reducing manufacturing lead-times and costs
  • staff being able to supply customers with detailed data on reliability, risk assessment and lead times
  • quotations being generated quickly and accurately.

As a company we are constantly looking at ways to improve our efficiency and products. This program enables us to reduce our design time whilst allowing maximum concentration on the element of the project not present within our design portfolio. Not only will the design phase become as lean as possible, it will also enable us to take on more technically challenging projects. We have developed a strong synergy with UH personnel ensuring we have the maximum input to the project.

The KTP is allowing me to gain practical knowledge of mechanical design engineering and product/project development. It is offering me work experience while at the same time furthering my educational training via the undertaking of an MSc and the associate development scheme.
