Flare

University of Hertfordshire helps turn visions into ventures

flare is the University’s Enterprise Ideas Challenge, a competition allowing aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to kick start their businesses.

The opportunity

flare is open to students and recent graduates of the University and gives entrants the chance to take their business ideas or newly formed start-ups (product or service based) and turn them into a reality. The competition offers plenty of support and training along the way in the form of workshops, one-to-one mentoring, boot camp sessions and much more.

The process

Once entrants have registered to participate in flare, the competition is split into three separate rounds. Round 1 sees competitors submit a summary of their business idea with successful candidates progressing to Round 2. In this round, entrants must submit a detailed business plan before the strongest candidates are shortlisted for the final round. Finalists are then required to attend boot camp sessions before pitching their business ideas to a panel of local business experts. The quality of the finalist’s pitches, their vision and the way they present their business ideas and themselves as aspiring entrepreneurs is what the judges look for when deciding the overall winner.

The result

The winner of flare will benefit from a generous prize package. The most recent flare winner was awarded a cash prize of £10,000, business consultancy with Exemplas, membership to the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry and office space in the University’s Enterprise Incubation Centre.
