Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programme

University of Hertfordshire hosts prestigious Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programme

The University of Hertfordshire has shown its entrepreneurial status to other universities by hosting the Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programme 2012.

The opportunity

The EULP is a pioneering initiative that responds to the need for entrepreneurial capability in UK universities. With the current economic challenges bringing uncertainty, universities of all shapes and sizes are increasingly needing to innovate, in order to realise greater opportunities and to develop their capacity to respond to the current environment.

Delivered through the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE) and Universities UK, this year’s programme was in partnership with Said Business School, University of Oxford and the University of Hertfordshire.

Having won the Times Higher Entrepreneurial University of the Year 2010, the University of Hertfordshire was asked to host Module 2 of this year’s prestigious Entrepreneurial University Leadership Programme (EULP). With universities coming from far and wide, there was an opportunity to show how entrepreneurship is at the heart of University’s mission.

The event

Led by eminent vice-chancellors, experts, academics, visionaries, practitioners and policy makers in the field of university education, the executive development programme is for senior university leaders.

Titled ‘Applying the Concept and Exploring Best Practice’, the second module at UH looked at a range of examples of best practice in key areas of the entrepreneurial concept including:

  • The entrepreneurial capabilities developed by the University of Hertfordshire
  • Key areas of entrepreneurial capability including: governance and culture; faculty and management motivation; enterprising skill development among students and student-led enterprise; knowledge transfer activities; regional and local partnerships; internationalisation; and relationships with the public and private sectors
  • Analysis of participant’s own organisations in the context of best practice and the development of approaches to entrepreneurial change.

Over four days, participants were involved in lectures, workshops and discussions, where not only was the University’s entrepreneurial culture showcased but external speakers opened participant’s minds to entrepreneurial thinking from different perspectives.

The results

“The participants were explicitly very positive about the way that the University at all levels opened itself up to exploration and questioning and enabled the group to uncover what really matters in creating an entrepreneurial university, such as Hertfordshire. It was a great showcase for the University and the participants will all have a new perspective of Hertfordshire as an entrepreneurial institution."

Paul Hannon, NCEE and Gay Haskins, University of Oxford

EULP 2012 Directors

“As a participant on the Programme myself, it was great to take part in Module two on my 'home ground', to see UH share its entrepreneurial approach with others and showcase its achievements.

“I also had the opportunity to compare this with how other participants were applying entrepreneurism in their own institutions and gain further understanding of what the term means within the Higher Education sector.
