Community outreach

UHArts and Galleries plays an active role in the community and runs many different cultural initiatives which help enrich the local community including the Young Film Critics’ Award, Arts Award and the Adders Young Film Festival and Awards. We also take part in various community festivals such as Kaleidoscope Festival and Rhythms of the World Festival.

Kaleidoscope Festival 2009

UHArts and Galleries took part in this year’s Kaleidoscope Festival on Saturday 18 July at Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City. The festival was organised by the Welwyn Hatfield Ethnic Minority Group with the support of members of the local community. It was a multicultural event highlighting and celebrating the cultural diversity found in Welwyn Hatfield.

This year’s UH activity involved an element of dressing up in clothes from other cultures and posing for photographs taken by Erika Oi; a professional photographer. Participants are able to view the photographs by clicking on the link below.

The Adders Young Film Festival and Awards

Supported by the University of Hertfordshire, Film Education Consortium for Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire County Council, The Adders Youth Film Festival and Awards is the only youth film festival and awards ceremony run entirely by young people, for young people. It provides an opportunity for young student film makers, from the ages of eleven to nineteen, to present their films - created, directed and produced by young people – to a panel of judges, with the chance to showcase these to a live audience at the end of the year and potentially be awarded for outstanding achievement.

The 2009 Adders Young Film Festival and Awards launched on 6 May, and is now open to receive submissions until 12 September 2009.

Film submissions will be judged by a panel of industry experts which last year included Neil Fox from Film Stock, Veronica Peat (University of Hertfordshire), Mita Lad (FDMX) and Sarah Shearman-Chase (CineClub). The Awards weekend will be held in October this year, featuring a day of film screenings at the University of Hertfordshire’s venue, The Weston Auditorium, and an Awards presentation ceremony at the St Alban’s Arena.

So, if you’re interested in making film, or know of someone who is, check out The Adders by going to www.adderfilms.co.uk/theadders and start filming!
